Alabama Women's Caucus for Art

ALWCA presents : "Intimate Spaces"

CALL FOR ENTRIES
Alabama Women’s Caucus for Art is proud to present a juried exhibition: Intimate Spaces, where we will celebrate the works of Alabama artists as they interpret the meaning of intimacy through art, as outlined in the prospectus below.

PROSPECTUS: Intimate Spaces

An old drawer, a cozy nest, a fragile shell, a forgotten picture… Our sense of being and becoming can be nestled in the cherished spaces of small physical objects. By exploring these intimate spaces, we unravel  the limitless  dimensions  of our poetic  imagination,  daydreaming,  and remembrance.  The notion  of  space  as the experiential  harbinger  of memories  and images provides  the impetus  for Intimate Spaces. We invite all artists from Alabama to submit small-scale works that reflect upon the relationship of space to intimacy - and intimacy to artistic and poetic imagination.

JUROR - Mira Gerard
Mira Gerard is chair and associate professor in the Department of Art & Design at East Tennessee State University. Gerard has curated several exhibitions and writes essays and artist interviews for publications such as Figure/Ground Communication.  She has exhibited her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions, nationally and internationally, with recent exhibitions at William King Museum in Abingdon, Virginia and Gallery 304 in New York.  Her paintings were selected for publication in the Manifest International Painting Annual and the Tusculum Review, and she has presented papers on the intersection of desire, painting, and psychoanalysis at conferences including Psychology & the Other in Cambridge, Massachusetts and the Southeastern College Art Conference.  She has received fellowships through  artists’ residencies including Cill Rialaig Project in Ireland, The Hambidge Center in Georgia, and The Vermont Studio Center. In 2014, she did a performance entitled Memories, Dreams, Obsessions At the Zizek Studies Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio.   Recently, her paintings were part of a 3-person exhibition, Contemporary Focus, in 2015 at the Knoxville Museum of Art. She received her BFA from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana and her MFA from the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia.
