ALABAMA WOMEN’S CAUCUS FOR ART JURIED EXHIBITION
In September of 2020, the Alabama Women’s Caucus for Art, (ALWCA), will be hosting an art exhibition in Lowe Mill’s second floor gallery space. We are seeking artwork which will articulate our Nation’s gender pay gap. This disparity is currently around $.80 to the dollar. We are seeking artists interested in making work which demonstrates the missing 20%. What would 80% of an image or object look like? What would 80% of an experience actually be? How important is this missing 20% to the quality of one’s life? Is this disparity outrageous? Are you angry?
Despite the Equal Pay Act of 1963, legal loopholes, biased attitudes and social constructs have continued to maintain significant economic inequality between genders. Women working full-time in the United States earn about 20% less than men. Looking at employment details some pay scale variations occur, but when all is said and done this is an average pay gap for women. (See links below Alabama specific information).

A little background information:
The narrowing, but persistent, gender gap in pay
By Nikki Graf, Anna Brown and Eileen Patten
“In 2018, women earned 85% of what men earned, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of median hourly earnings of both full- and part-time workers in the United States. Based on this estimate, it would take an extra 39 days of work for women to earn what men did in 2018. By comparison, the Census Bureau found that, in 2017, full-time, year-round working women earned 80% of what their male counterparts earned.”
Executive Summary: from PayScale
“Since we have started tracking the gender pay gap, the difference between the earnings of women and men has shrunk. But significant disparity in how men and women are paid still remains. The uncontrolled gender pay gap, which takes the ratio of median earnings of all women to all men, decreased by $0.05 since 2015. However, women still make only $0.79 for every dollar men make in 2019.”
Information from the AAUW
“Despite civil rights laws and advancements in women’s economic status, workplace discrimination still persists. Typically, women who work full time take home about 80 cents for every dollar a full-time male worker earns. Over a career (defined as 47 years), women’s total estimated earnings loss compared with men is $700,000 for a high school graduate, $1.2 million for a college graduate, and $2 million for a professional school graduate.”
